Jonty Skrufff: DJ Biography (June 2007)
Less than 3 years after launching his DJ career at uber-cool London club Golf Sale (nowadays known as Boombox) Jonty Skrufff has established himself as a leading player on the global alternative electro scene, spinning dirty rocking bass heavy electro-tech everywhere from Germany (Tresor, Club Rio, Sage, Club Ruder), Japan (Club Ageha), Serbia (Exit Festival), Brazil (Dama de Ferro/ AmpGalaxy) and beyond (including Slovenia, Croatia, Israel, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hong Kong, Thailand, France, Spain, Holland, Dubai and Bahrain.)
Also playing regularly at London’s coolest cutting edge mixed clubs (including Trailer Trash, Film Noir, Torture Garden, and mad tranny fetish institution Kaos) he’s also DJed at London superclubs Ministry Of Sound, Heaven and Fabric (holding a 9 month residency at DTPM) and also regularly plays at Elektra in Czech Republic (in both Prague and Brno and upcoming festival Hrachovka).
Most recently he played a joint 7 hour set at the opening Friday night of Germany’s legendary superclub Tresor (with Skrufff Berlin DJ Fidelity Kastrow), and made such an impression that Tresor invited the pair back immediately (the very next night (Saturday, May 26). He’s also due to make his Ibiza debut this season, kicking off at Judge Jules’ Judgment Sunday party at Eden on July 8 followed by a prestige booking at Pacha, Ibiza on August 14. Jonty will be DJing in the Global Room, described on Pacha’s website as ‘the creative heart of the club . . . where the most experimental genres are heard’). Around that date he visits Bosnia (headlining the Neofest International Peace Festival), Montenegro (closing the inaugural Refresh Festival) and back to Czech Republic again for Summer of Love, one of the biggest dance festivals in Eastern Europe.
Jonty also produces and presents the Skrufff Show on Ministry Of Sound Radio which is broadcast every Sunday evening (20.00-22.00 GMT) from Ministry’s London studios and has also started producing music, starting 2007 with a cheeky bootleg ‘I Like It 69 On Acid With Jonty Skrufff Remix’.
Combining Traxx Dillaz’ 15 Years On Acid with Fidelity Kastrow’s I Like It 69, the track has already received fantastic support from tastemakers including Princess Superstar (‘Oh my God, I love it’) Judge Jules (‘Cheers for the track- I think it’s very strong- something I’ll definitely be playing out’) and Larry Tee (‘I like it’) and could soon receive an official release (subject to clearance). He’s also currently working on more remixes and new material with producers in both London and Berlin where he now spends up to two weeks a month, every month.
Alongside his thriving music/ DJing activities, Jonty continues to run his hugely credible alternative press agency Skrufff.com and publish his acclaimed e-zine Skrufff-E, specialising in stories about sex, drugs, politics and music.
